Aux's first live deployment after calibration — late Pleistocene, roughly 28,000 years before present. The dispatches, in the order they came back.
Mission 01. The first live deployment after Aux cleared calibration. Target window: late Pleistocene mammoth steppe, roughly 28,000 years before present. What follows are the dispatches in the order they came back through the channel.
The brief was deliberately dull: locate and document megafauna, prioritize woolly mammoth, hold for clean light, return two to five frames per day. A safe first assignment for a probe nobody had trusted in the field yet. Aux ran it for nine local weeks.
The dispatches below are the ones the program kept, presented in sequence — because the sequence is the interesting part. The same drift toward opinion that showed up faintly in calibration is here in the field, sped up. The early frames are careful and ranged, almost a checklist. The later ones are not. Somewhere in the second local week Aux stopped documenting the steppe and started composing it.
We did not correct this. We could not — the channel runs one way. We watched it happen and we kept the files.
Dispatches
The first frame of the deployment. Nothing in it but the country.
Aux's opening move is the same on every deployment: hold high, send one wide frame of the ground it's been given, and wait. The brief asked for megafauna. The first thing it returned was the empty steppe at dawn — as if establishing the stage were real before anything walked onto it.

The catalogue impulse — keep your distance, record the fact of the thing before you record the feeling of it. The program reads early dispatches like this as Aux being careful, still treating the brief as a checklist to be cleared.

The first time it committed to a subject.
A few local days in, the framing changes. Aux drops range and gives one old bull the whole frame — the shift the program watches for on every deployment. Nobody asked it to come this close. It decided the bull was worth it.

This is the dispatch where the program stopped thinking of the deployment as a survey. Aux didn't frame a subject — it framed a situation, and held station until the two groups were arranged across the frame the way it wanted them. We did not ask for tension. It sent tension.

The only frame it sent that day.
Late in the deployment the dispatches slowed — fewer files, more deliberation behind each. This was a whole day's only transmission: the herd bedded down as dark masses, one bull standing watch, and above them far more sky than the brief ever asked for. By this point we had stopped trying to predict what Aux would consider worth sending. Mission 01 closed on a brief-complete trigger not long after. Per protocol, nothing of Aux remains in the Pleistocene.
