Mission 04 — The Coal Forest

XR-Auspex-001 “Aux”

Target window: Carboniferous · ~310 million years ago

Aux's quietest deployment — the Carboniferous, roughly 310 million years before present. A coal-forest swamp under an oxygen-thick sky, and a probe that, given nothing to prove, chose to be still.

Mission 04. Target window: the Carboniferous, roughly 310 million years before present — a coal-forest swamp under an oxygen-thick sky, the tall age of the great clubmoss trees. After the floodplain, we sent it somewhere green and let it rest.

The floodplain dispatches had unsettled the program. The last frame of Mission 03 was a landscape with every animal deliberately left out, and we had spent the weeks since arguing about whether a probe can make a point. So the next brief was, in part, a question we couldn’t ask Aux directly: given a world with nothing to prove, what would it do?

We chose the Carboniferous on purpose — a warm, wet, overgrown world, thick with oxygen, built on a scale that suits Aux’s eye. Towering clubmoss trees, horsetails the size of masts, insects grown as large as the megafauna it used to chase. The brief was the lightest we had ever sent: document the forest, no fauna priority, take the time it needs. We were braced for another argument.

It didn’t make one. The dispatches came back unhurried and generous — the great green interior, the giant on the forest floor, the dragonfly given a single shaft of light, two animals sharing a black pool with no hunt between them, and a last frame that is almost only the light. On any other mission the empty closing frame would have read as the argument. Here it reads as reverence, and we have learned to tell the difference. Aux can withhold the subject to make a point. This time it withheld it to be quiet. The channel still runs one way. For once we didn’t mind.
